9 MAY | Workshop NOWALL: Europe, Human Rights and the Fall of the Berlin Wall

On 9 May (from 10AM – Lisbon time), the NOWALL partners will be promoting a workshop based on the “counter and alternative narratives” for the promotion of diversity in Europe. The idea is to involve the participants in deconstructing some arguments related to freedom of expression between the two sides of the Berlin Wall and the limits of it as a human right and the use of hate speech as a way of manipulating the masses, in the past and in the present.The event will have the following organization:

1) 10:00 am to 1:30 pm (30min coffee break) – Freedom of Expression, a human right;

    • The origins of human rights
    • What are human rights?
    • What is freedom of expression? 
    • How are they related?
  • Activity: Saying it worse (On Limits of Freedom of Expression)
  • Debate about the paradox of Karl Popper with Study Case
  • Questions/Answer Time

2) 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm – lunch on site

3) 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm (30min coffee break) – Hate speech, past and present.

    • What are the boundaries between hate speech and freedom of expression? 
    • Media and Internet literacy (using examples of the Berlin wall period and present examples)
  • Activity: Checking the Facts (On online Hate Speech)
  • Debate about the Charlie Hebdo Cover: Can’t you make fun of everything?
  • Questions/Answer Time

Considering the current situation, we will conduct the workshop in the building’s outer space in order to minimize any risk. As well as we oblige the use of masks and other precautionary measures.
